“You’ll die a peaceful death.”
“You won’t get Alzheimer’s. You’ll live a long life. Then you’ll die a peaceful death. Just how it was meant to be.”
Incredibly powerful words offered by a bus passenger.
The Flowerman paused to fully comprehend these words offered out of love and respect. Emotions inside began to warm the heart and mind as thoughts turned to unlocking the secrets of living a long life. These words offered came from an ardent cyclist who is roughly the same age as The Flowerman 🌻 as he was loading his well travelled bicycle into the slots of the Love Bus’s bicycle rack. You see, this passenger has cycled across many different continents, his own journey began as a young man.
Every time we see each other around the valley whether it be at a local coffee shop, at the Comox Marina, or as he rides the Love Bus we always greet each other with a warm smile and handshake. Certainly a lot of mutual love and respect as we both cycle through a great life.
The Flowerman 🌻has been posting for years now the countless benefits of a cycling lifestyle. The memories created, the many challenges faced head on, the enormous joy of cycling the open roads with 81 years young mentor Bill Dickerson, the sights, smells and sounds that can only be captured from the saddle of your bicycle, the enormous health benefits, the tremendous favour you’re returning to Mother Earth. When The Flowerman 🌻is much older and much greyer, he guarantees you he will look back at this time of his wonderful life with so many fond memories of his cycling lifestyle with absolutely no regrets, with amazement that he was able to accomplish so much on the saddle of a bicycle.
Please remember that this journey is coming from a man who had a suicide attempt in March of 2016, had suicidal ideations every waking moment for 15 long gruelling months, addicted to multiple antipsychotics prescribed by his physician who soon after lost his license to medical malpractice and tax evasion, lost more money than most make in a lifetime, wound up institutionalized, found himself experiencing homelessness, was morbidly obese, prediabetic, incredible stiffness in both hips and knees loosing so much flexibility, a 25 year history with smoking cigarettes.
The Flowerman 🌻hopes you have been getting the hint. Get creative, think outside the box, take on a different mindset, invest in your health while investing in your bank account. The Flowerman 🌻now believes that even if he had the money he wouldn’t buy a car, new or used. If a car is required for an adventure, then a rental will be happily arranged. LEMON-AID will always be there for pure joy rides.
When The Flowerman’s 🌻friend told him that “you won’t get Alzheimer’s, you’ll live a long life, then you’ll die a peaceful death. Just how it was meant to be.” These words rang full of hope that he was doing the right thing. Yes. There have been sacrifices living life without a car. But the thought of coming to the end of the line, then passing peacefully away definitely motivates The Flowerman 🌻to keep peddling for his life.
Cycling is certainly not the panacea (Panacea, a solution or remedy for all difficulties or diseases. The term “panacea” is used in a negative way to describe the overuse of any one solution to solve many different problems, especially in medicine.). As Doctor Alex Nataros tells The Flowerman 🌻”cycling is a great exercise, non weight bearing and good for the joints. Unfortunately there’s no cure for Alzheimer’s once diagnosed but exercise is indeed good prevention.”
Like anyone of us, The Flowerman’s🌻number could could come up unexpectedly for any number of reasons. But at least for now and the foreseeable future he’s going to ride his bicycle filled with gratitude for as long as he can.
Perhaps adopting a hard core cardiovascular lifestyle born out of necessity wasn’t such a bad thing after all. Perhaps it’s the apple that keeps the doctor away.
